	Nada Alobaidi is a multidisciplinary designer and an architect. She is a former head-teaching assistant, a part-time instructor, and a regular reviewer at the graduate and undergraduate level at the University of Toronto. 
 
 She co-founded Tri Design Studio in the United Arab Emirates, a boutique practice with a profile of educational, offices, and retail projects, among these are multiple commissions by the Government of Sharjah to renovate existing community centers as well as collaborations with local artisans through Irthi Contemporary Craft Council. 
 
 Nada was a design lead at IKEA MENA, overseeing a team of 8 designers and managing project teams of up to 50 multidisciplinary professionals. Her work included design, team leadership, and project management of new retail spaces and temporary installations. This included IKEA's multiple participations in Dubai Design Week. 
 
 Beyond professional roles, she independently participates in design fairs such as Sikka Art Fair in Dubai and DesignTO in Toronto. Her research focuses on the use of earthy materials, particularly stone, and draws inspiration from quarries as evocative spaces of architecture. Her work calls for the understanding of making as a design tool and explores the scalability of craft through the integration of technology. 

Nada carries many places within her, she grew up in Baghdad, lived in Dubai, and  currently based between Toronto and London.

Portrait Of a Marble Quarry is a large format drawing that investigates ways to represent texture. It is a commentary on the challenges faced in the architectural practice of engaging with natural materials evocatively and the bias inherent in representation tools often prioritizing form over materiality. This contributes to the lack of design intentionality when it comes to material use and the disconnection from material sourcing, and extraction practices. The drawing uses experimental and innovative drawing techniques to portray the power and magic of quarry spaces in that rare moment in the lifespan of stone — suspended between being raw and refined, between being a landscape, a building material, and an architectural space. &#38;nbsp;

Representation experiments included graphite stone rubbing, pressing natural textures into clay, and embossing stone on watercolor paper, among others. The final drawing was produced using the embossed paper method. 


This work is part of a year-long graduate research that uses drawings as a method to investigate and iterate architectural ideas using allegorical narratives that are rooted in current and historical material research.

The work is informed by visits to numerous quarries in western Sicily and the Alentejo marble region in Portugal, in their various states, from abandoned, to repurposed and active extraction sites. These geographies offer unique opportunities to intimately engage with these landscapes.
 
 These visits triggered a curiosity to study the architectural qualities of quarry spaces and the possibilities of bringing some of these characteristics —scale, tactility, materiality, and the inherent monumentality found in monolithic structures— into architecture.

The Qarayen Children Center is a non-profit community hub
and an after-school program catering to the local community in the Al Qarayen
neighbourhood of Sharjah. The project is a renovation of a decades-old
abandoned building that is transformed through a child-centric design approach.
This has guided decision-making in the design process and led to the creation
of vibrant and imaginative spaces and a formal language that intentionally
avoids sharp angles and employs soft materials for safety considerations. The
outcome is a series of playful enclosures designed to stimulate the imagination
of young minds.


The building's original structure and envelope were
completely saved, however the interior spatial layout was reconfigured, openings were manipulated, and the building façade was reimagined. These changes enhanced
the quality of interior spaces and improved the thermal and therefore energy
performance of the building. 


The project was designed in close collaboration with the
centre’s educational team to provide spaces that respond to the dynamics and
flexibility requirements of the program.

The Qarayen Children Center is a non-profit community hub
and an after-school program catering to the local community in the Al Qarayen
neighbourhood of Sharjah. The project is a renovation of a decades-old
abandoned building that is transformed through a child-centric design approach.


The façade renovation
involved a shift in the exterior cladding to a vibrant color and the
implementation of a double-skin solution. The new skin envelops the existing
geometry, forming a unified and cohesive structure, while establishing an intermediate shaded space. This spatial threshold serves as a
valuable transition zone, particularly crucial in a hot climate like that of
the UAE.


The materiality and form of
the new skin purposefully respond to the original structure, allowing the
underlying framework to remain visible rather than being completely concealed.
This deliberate approach aims to serve as a testament to the ongoing dialogue
between the old and the new.


The newly introduced
perforated metal skin functions as a vertical shading element, effectively
moderating the entry of natural light and heat through the windows. The result
is a cooler interior environment with a gentle orange light quality, fostering a
more appealing and comfortable indoor experience.


The project additionally includes
a renovation of the hard and soft scape, and the relationship to the public
realm through the redesign of the building fence to become a movable structure that
could open to the neighbourhood during public
events.

Inhabiting Stone comprises a series of PROUN stone models that empoly stairs as an architectural device to transform the reading of offcuts and tease the imagination with possibilities of inhabitation.

The stair is as a primary architectural element, that indicates use and establish a relationship between the human body dimensions and the imposing monoliths. The aim is to imagine an architecture of weighty, solid aesthetics, countering the prevalent dominance of glass and white walls. Additionaly it speaks to the idea of designing with found conditions and imperfections, envisioning a future for architecture that embraces such qualities.

This work is part of a year-long graduate thesis project titled Stone Portraits that investigates the power of materials in design and engages with stone intimately.

Hand to Machine represents a series of physical models translated into the digital realm through 3D scanning, to explore the scalability of handcraft in architecture. The goal is to leverage the strengths of both realms, combining the intentionality and creativity of the human hand with the efficiency of digital tools.
In both the physical and the digital forms, these models investigate the relationship between unit size and homogeneity, seeking to understand the essence of monolithic structures, even when comprised of smaller components. Recognizing that architecture is a composition of individual units, the exploration of the interpretation of individual pieces versus the whole becomes crucial.
These models challenge the boundaries of this inquiry through a combination of diverse unit sizes, materials, and the integration of precise machine cuts, found conditions, and the inherent inaccuracies of hand-shaped objects. The digitalized model extends this exploration by isolating specific parts, experimenting with varied combinations, and testing digital material textures to create drawings that evoke spaces suspended between nature and architecture.
The research suggests potential future applications for this workflow, envisioning the possibility of architects gaining access to digital libraries of natural materials composed of identical avatars. This resource could be utilized for more evocative material-based design work, opening up new possibilities.
This work is part of a year-long graduate thesis project titled Stone Portraits that investigates the power of materials in design and engages with stone intimately.

Hand to Machine II is a significant component of the final Graduate thesis exhibition, It serves as a demonstrative exploration of a workflow that starts with hand carving on a modest scale, progresses into the digital domain through 3D scanning, and is ultimately replicated on a larger scale using CNC milling. The primary objective is to articulate the potential scalability of handcraft within the field of architecture and to identify opportunities for integrating both manual expertise and material knowledge into the design process.
 
The project started with the creation of small-scale physical models, which were subsequently digitized. The digital model underwent manipulation to explore various combinations of the original elements, ultimately resulting in their reproduction for the initial testing phase. During the process, some of the hand traces were inadvertently lost, while traces from the machine became apparent. The result is a hybrid amalgamation of these layered tools, presenting new and intriguing design possibilities.

The final prototype took the form of cladding applied to two facets of an existing column within the Zeidler Library at the University of Toronto. The final installation measures 1.8 meters in height and 0.45 meters in width on each side.

Weaving Into
Space is a unique project that employs a participatory and a collaborative
design model, with local artisans playing a crucial role as makers of
significant portions of the interior space. As part of the comprehensive
renovation of the Wasit Youth Center—a hub for the local community—the project
seeks to establish a space that nurtures a connection to Emirati cultural
heritage while moving away from the prevalence of international design
language.


Confronted with the
challenge of working within an existing structural grid that no longer aligned
with the new program and its spatial requirements, the design team arrived at a
final solution: an open plan featuring five curved partitions that wrap around
the existing columns, creating distinct zones for various learning groups.


Viewed as a project within a
project, Weaving Into Space presented an opportunity for the design
team to engage local artisans in collaboration with the Irthi Contemporary
Crafts Council—a body dedicated to promoting local crafts in the UAE. Emirati
women artisans were commissioned to 'weave' the partition walls, thereby
preserving the intangible heritage of Emirati weaving traditions. These
handcrafted walls provided financial support to the artisans, facilitated a
transfer of knowledge within the artisan community, and took the craft to an
architectural scale.

	Graduate Thesis Exhibition "Stone Portraits" &#124; 2023

Supervisor: John Shnier 
The Stone Portraits exhibition unfolded in the subterranean space of the Zeidler Library at the University of Toronto. Situated amidst book stacks, deliberately chosen for its reminiscent of quarry spaces—a nod to the project's core ideas.
The setting mirrored the speculative building typology explored in the work, envisioning a a material laboratory—a workshop that organically constructs itself through material prototypes. The year-long project is a call for a profound understanding and engagement with materiality, specifically focusing on stone—an ancient and robust material that is experiencing a resurgence in contemporary architecture due to its sustainable potential.

The research methodology employed the potency of fragments to construct a comprehensive whole.&#38;nbsp;Stone Portraits included drawings, artifacts, and physical models as tools to explore and iterate architectural concepts.

The exhibition comprised of 18 imaginative drawings, documentation of field research, 24 physical models, a large drawing measuring 2.5m x 4.5m, and a 1:1 prototype covering an existing column. The project extended its exploration to experimentation with representation methods, employing a mix of hand-based techniques, traditional machinery, and new technologies such as 3D scanning and CNC milling.
